Syria 2500BC – 1500BC
The past thousand years[1]http://www.timemaps.com/history/syria-2500bc have seen Syria come under the domination of powerful neighbours from Mesopotamia and Egypt, and also large-scale movements of peoples – Amorites and Canaanites – into it from the arid lands to the east. Probably in the last few centuries one such set of wandering nomads has been a group from whom the Israelite people will eventually trace their descent.
The north of the region has now come under the rule of an Indo-European people called the Mitanni. The south is increasingly within the cultural orbit of Egypt.[2]http://www.timemaps.com/history/ancient-egypt-1500bc
